LDS Student's death leads district to re-evaluate policy

The death of 15-year-old LDS high school student Jamie Cahill has led the Tolleson High School District in the Phoenix, Arizona area to re-evaluate its 'open campus' policy, which allows students to leave campus during lunch to eat at fast food outlets. Cahill died in an automobile accident as she and five others tried to rush from campus to an eating establishment and back in 45 minutes.

Mormon youth describes dealing with Drug Abuse

The Provo Daily Herald ran a series of articles on Drug Abuse on October 25th, and one article describing a drug abuse parent education night in Springville Utah included comments by LDS Church member Paul Jeffers and his family on his struggle with adiction. Jeffers mother said that family expectations often lead to guilt that can fuel a downward trend, and, "When you're a Mormon, it's even worse."

Professor Richard Neitzel Holzapfel is known at BYU as a 'Maverick,' doing the unusual to teach his class. While teaching at the BYU Jerusalem Center, he regularly held class on the shore of the Sea of Galilee. He holds degrees from Hebrew Union College in Los Angeles and a Ph.D. from the University of California, Irvine.

LDS Convert combines Hot Rods, Gospel

Ed Roth, who converted to the LDS Church in 1974, has found a way to combine his religious and creative persuits. "Big Daddy" Roth builds custom "Hot Rods," and manages to include an LDS reference, such as the letters CTR, in most of his products. Four years ago Roth was given the MUMU award (Most Unusual Mormon in Utah) by Deseret News columnist Jerry Johnston. A resident of Manti since 1989, Roth has reached enough success that he is having to sue over knock-offs of his designs.

Temple helps South Carolina couple through cancer

John and Patty Cline were sealed in the Orlando Florida Temple, and have looked forward to the Columbia, South Carolina Temple, where they served as ushers during the dedication. The family found the experience particularly meaningful because John is ill. "I found out last week that I'm terminal with cancer," he told the Church News.

90-year-old named Mrs. Golden Years

Adeline Parker was named Mrs. Golden Years at the Utah Health Care Association Conference in Park City on October 19th. Parker said that her hero was LDS President Heber J. Grant, who sent her on a mission.

Spencer Family's Vacation/Trial wins contest

Karen M. Spencer won the Deseret News' funiest vacation contest for her account of the family's 1989 trip to San Francisco, immediately prior to her son leaving to serve an LDS mission. The trip was marred by too many people in one car, multiple injuries that required ER visits and the San Francisco earthquake that year.

'98 award an example for '99 nominees

The family of Kurt and Nancy Weaver won the 1998 Cypress Family of the year, and would-be nominees are looking to them for an idea of how to win. "We didn't do anything special," says Nancy. "The community is right, our beliefs are right for us, and we were able to raise a successful family." Selection committee member Joan Edwards says, "We're looking for the All-American families where the kids love each other and ask their parents for advice. Nancy and Kurt really know the parenting business."

2 BYU Professors receive awards

Susan Easton Black, professor of Church History and Doctrine, and Richard Eddy, Dean of Continuing Education, were both given awards for thier service to BYU's Continuing Education program. Also given awards were Mark Alan Madsen, acting director of Student Financial Services, for his assistance to Continuing Education students and Lela Hafen, office manager, graduation supervisor and evaluator for the College of Humanities, for her service to students in the program.

Deseret News publisher gets "People of Vision" Award

William James Mortimer, publisher of the Deseret News, was given the George S. and Dolores Dore Eccles Foundation's "People of Vision" Award recently. LDS Church member Sally Rich Burbidge of the Mount Olympus 2nd Ward, Salt Lake Mount Olympus Stake was also honored by the foundation.

Dorothy O. Rea, former Deseret News staff writer, dies at 88

Rea was a correspondent and staff writer for the Deseret News for 25 years, covering mainly BYU and Provo, Utah. She also served as the Deseret News' Christmas news editor and wrote a widely-read column, "By Their Fruits," which ran in the Church News section. She also wrote a series of articles for the Church News, "Wives of the General Authorities."

Relief Society Board Member Belva Barlow Ashton

Ashton, 71, served on the Relief Society Board from 1962 to 1978. She also served with her husband, Wendell J. Ashton, former publisher of the Deseret News, presiding over the England London Mission.
