BYU 7th in Fall Sears Directors' Cup Standings
CLEVELAND, OHIO -- The final Fall 2000 standings for the Sears
Directors' Cup have been released, and BYU is in 7th place, just a
point behind Colorado. The standings are BYU's second-best result in
the eight-year history of the Cup.
The Sears Directors' Cup is meant to recognize the College or
University with the best overall athletic program. Schools are
awarded points according to their performance in up to 20 collegiate
sports -- 10 mens and 10 womens sports. The national champion in each
sport receives 100 points, and each place after that is awarded fewer
points. Currently, North Carolina is in first place with 310 points.
BYU has 219.
BYU has always performed better in the Fall, mainly because it
participates in a larger proportion of the sports offered, only
missing Field Hockey, Men's Water Polo and Men's Soccer. This year's
Fall season results were due mainly to three women's sports, a
second-place finish in Cross Country and ninth-place finishes in
Soccer and Volleyball.
In the Winter semester, BYU has a more difficult time, since it is
missing five of the 13 collegiate sports that compete during Winter:
Fencing, Men's Gymnastics, Men's Wrestling, Rifle and Skiing. Men's
Wrestling was eliminated in the past year, which will make it more
difficult for BYU to score well in the Cup.
BYU's best result was 12th, for the 1998-1999 school year. That year
BYU finished 5th after the Fall semester. BYU also finished 7th after
the 1997 Fall semester, and ended up 18th for the year.
