Jon Huntsman Jr., Ambassador to China?
WASHINGTON, DC -- This morning's Washington Post calls LDS Church member Jon
Huntsman, Jr., vice chairman of Huntsman Corp. and son of LDS billionaire
Jon M. Huntsman is a "strong possibility" for Ambassador to China. Huntsman
Jr. speaks mandarin because of service as an LDS missionary, and already has
ambassadorial experience, after serving as ambassador to Singapore under
George Bush.
Ambassadorial positions, especially non-critical positions, are often used
to reward political contributors, and the Huntsman family has long been
major donors to republican causes. However, the post in China is an
important one.
Jon M. Huntsman Jr. also worked in the Reagan White House and as deputy
assistant secretary of commerce for East Asian and Pacific affairs. His
father also has Washington experience, after working in the Nixon White House.
