NuSkin Up While Rest of Mormon Stocks Fall
NEW YORK, NEW YORK -- Utah cosmetics manufacturer NuSkin Enterprises
jumped nearly 20% last week, while both the broader market and nearly
every other stock on the Mormon Stock Index fell, in the index's 3rd
straight loss. The jump in NuSkin's price came because the company
started a quarterly dividend and announced a stock repurchase
program, to investor's delight.
The Mormon Stock Index's drop was in line with the broader markets,
falling less than the NASDAQ but more than the NYSE and the S&P 500.
And the fall was broad-based, with three-quarters of the 24 stocks in
the index falling, and only 5 rising. Of those five, only NuSkin was
up more than 4%.
Leading the drop was Linux software firm Caldera Systems, which fell
nearly 25% during the week. Sunglasses manufacturer Oakley, Inc. fell
12.5% on fears that it would loose market share after a competitor,
Luxottica, purchased Oakley's largest customer, Suglass Hut. Merrill
Lynch downgraded Oakley as a result.
Fiber optics firm Corvis also hit a new low, dropping 11% for the
week, mainly due to demand from pre-IPO investors to sell their
shares. Under SEC rules, most pre-IPO investors must wait six months
following an IPO before they can sell their stock. The volume of
stock from those wishing to sell Corvis' stock exceeds demand for the
stock, pushing the price down.
