The End of ZCMI
SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH -- The ZCMI name is in the final days of hanging
outside the fourteen stores that once made up the LDS Church-owned
chain. Meier and Frank, the Oregon-based subsidiary of St. Louis' May
Department Stores, announced this week the schedule for changing the
names of the stores to Meier and Frank, and for opening the stores on
Sundays.
The department store chain, which purchased the 14-store group of
ZCMI stores from the Church last year for $52 million, will
officially change the store's names starting April 18th, as part of a
$60 million renovation. Then on April 22nd, the stores will open on
Sunday for the first time. Renovations to the stores will continue
until November 2002.
After that, the only remaining used of the ZCMI name will be the LDS
Church-owned ZCMI Center Mall in downtown Salt Lake City, and the
facade of the original store. LDS Church spokesman Dale Bills told
the Associated Press that the Church has no other plans for the ZCMI
name.
