LDS Woman is Fresno Mother of the Year ... at Age 85

FRESNO, CALIFORNIA -- LoRen Watson Snow was named Mother of the Year by the Fresno County Women in Chambers of Commerce and will be honored at a luncheon on May 11, at the Fresno Plaza Hotel. Snow, affectionately known as "Loie" said, "Oh, no, you got the wrong woman." "The last time I gave birth was about 61 years ago. I can't be Mother of the Year."

Eighty-five-year-old Snow was born January 25, 1916, in St. George, Utah, where she met her husband Virgil Snow. They were married August 10, 1937. The couple lived in St.George, Utah before Virgil left to fight in the Army during World War II as an artillery captain. After the war, the family moved to Fontana in Southern California where Virgil worked as a general practitioner.

The family made their final move to Fresno where Virgil became an eye surgeon. He died on July 21, 2000. Virgil and LoRen were married 63 years and according to LoRen it is within the family that she accomplished her greatest work as a wife and mother. She is mother to Richard Clark "Pepper" Snow, Tiffany Snow Madsen, Toni Snow Johnson and Sydnee Anna Snow Russell.

The Fresno County Women's Group President, Marcie Reisz, surprised Snow when she informed her of the news at her Tower District home. "But all I do is sit here and gather dust," Snow said. "Am I hallucinating? I can't believe it. Maybe I'm on medication." Then she looked at her children and said, "How much did you pay these people?"

Daughter Tiffany Madsen told the crowd, "My mother is the most beautiful, most giving person. We honor her everyday." Snow stopped her saying, "I don't do anything anymore. I don't even cook." Bewildered she added, "I can't believe my children took the time," and then scolded them for not having refreshments for the guests.

LoRen has been an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and is proud of the volunteer work that she has done over the years. "But this is the most emotional event I've ever had." "I don't have many years left to remember. But this will be tender in my heart forever after."
