MSI: Index Jumps 7.3%, Adds 32nd Company
NEW YORK, NEW YORK -- The Mormon Stock Index added its 32nd company
this past week and increased the number of companies it actively
tracks to 40 companies as the index's first anniversary approaches.
As if to commemorate its anniversary, the index exploded, jumping
more than 8 points to 122.75 and out performing all the major indices
last week. However, the index finishes its anniversary down nearly 6
points over last year, a drop of 4.5%.
Added to the index this week was Affiliated Computer Services, a
software and data entry services firm that purchased the start-up
firm owned by LDS Church members Lynn and Tom Blodgett. Lynn has been
made an Executive Vice President at the firm and group president of
its Business Process Services division, based in Sandy, Utah.
The stocks on the index were generally up for the week. Only five of
the stocks were down, the largest, Cadence Design dropped 6.5%. Of
the 27 up stocks, six rose more than 20% last week, and Computerized
Thermal Imaging rose 50% for the week. Also recording large increases
were Corvis, Dionex, Hollywood Entertainment, Micrel Semiconductor
and Swift Transportation. Micrel and Dell Computer, which rose nearly
12%, together accounted for nearly one-third of the increase in the
index.
