Fort That Sheltered Martin Handcart Company Found

An archaeological project initiated by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has discovered Seminoe Fort, a trading post on the Mormon and Oregon Trails where members of the ill-fated Martin Handcart Company sought shelter during a blizzard in 1856. The Church started the project, which is also sponsored by the Wyoming Department of State Parks and Cultural Resources, the University of Wyoming and the National Park Service, to include the fort as part of its Martin's Cove Visitor's Center.

Fire That Destroyed LDS Chapel in Ohio Ruled Arson

Fire investigators have ruled that the fire that destroyed part of an LDS chapel was an arson attack, and brought in Federal investigators to help look for evidence and suspects. The fire started before 3 am Tuesday, July 3rd in a classroom in the building. The fire destroyed the building's chapel and three classrooms before it hit a firewall and stopped. Damage was estimated at $500,000 by local fire officials.

Redlands Temple Plans Released, Few Obstacles Expected

The plans for the Redlands, California Temple call for a 130-foot spire that will stand out in a city with few buildings taller than two stories. The plans also show a one-story building with dramatic glazed windows buffered from the surrounding neighborhood by citrus trees and elegant landscaping. And, best of all for local members, city officials expect few obstacles to the buildings construction.

Hatch Favors Stem Cell Funding, Draws Pro-Life Ire

In a move that surprised many and shocked Pro-life advocates, Utah Senator Orrin Hatch sent a memo to President George W. Bush outlining his support for stem cell research. Although many in the pro-life movement have fought research using the cells, which are obtained from embryos, Hatch (R-UT) is part of a group of at least 5 other Republican Senators, including fellow LDS Church member Gordon Smith (R-OR), and 30 House Republicans who favor the research.

NYC Mormon Named to IMF

New York attorney Randal Quarles was named Friday by US President George W. Bush as the US Executive Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF). Quarles, a native of Roy, Utah, leads the financial institutions group and is a partner at New York law firm Davis, Polk and Wardwell. He was also the Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Treasury for financial institutions policy in the George Bush (Sr.) administration. His appointment must be confirmed by the US Senate.

Local Paper Learns of Mission President's Service

In answer to a call from the living prophet, Gordon B. Hinckley, President of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Nigel and Avalon Wappett left the subarctic of Interior Alaska to serve a three year mission as President of the Phoenix Arizona Mission, one of 330 missions scattered throughout 171 countries worldwide. Here they are supervising 200 missionaries serving in the Central Arizona and the Phoenix metropolitan area.

Memoir of First African American Priest in Texas Published

Less than two years after Allan Johnson Sr. died, his son, Allen Jr., has published his father's memoir, telling the story of the persecution an racism his father endured, how he joined the LDS Church, and his ordination to the priesthood on Father's Day, 1978. The self-published memoir has caught the attention of the local press in Austin, and his son says he is trying to get the book out to the LDS market as well.

LDS Author Wins 3rd Award For 'Stories of Young Pioneers'

LDS Young Adult author Violet Kimball has received a third award for her book, "Stories of Young Pioneers: In Their Own Words," making the book one of the most awarded LDS books of the past year. The most recent awards are from the magazine Foreword, a book review magazine, which gave "Stories of Young Pioneers" their 2001 Book of the Year Award in Young Adult Non-fiction, and from the Independent Book Publishers Association, which made the title a finalist for the 2001 Juvenile Young Adult Nonfiction Independent Publishers Book Award. The book covers the experiences of young pioneers traveling through the west in the mid-nineteenth century and is written for young readers.

Church May Sell Forest Hills TN Site to Baptists

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has reached a deal to sell a 21-acre site originally slated for the Nashville Temple to a Southern Baptist congregation who wants to construct a church on the site. The Grace Community Church would have to get zoning approval from the city of Forest Hills to build, and Forest Hills Mayor Charles Evers says he has "no opinion" about their plans.

LDS Exec Named to Coke Diversity Task Force

M. Anthony Burns, an LDS Church member and chairman of Ryder Systems, has been named to an oversight task force that will ensure Coca-Cola Co. compliance with a racial discrimination lawsuit settlement. Burns will serve a four-year term as one of seven members of the task force, which will issue annual reports to Coke, the court and the plaintiffs in the lawsuit. He resigned last November as CEO of Ryder Systems, but remains the company's Chairman.
