Former Mission, Temple President Joseph Hamstead
SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH -- Joseph Hamstead, 77, beloved husband and father and
servant in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, passed away
August 9, 2001. Brother Hamstead served as president of the London, England
Stake from 1967-1972 and served along with his wife Margaret as Temple
President and Matron of the London Temple from 1982-1986. He served as a
Stake Patriarch in the early 1980's and as president of the Zimbabwe Mission
during 1987-1990. Of all the service that Joseph Hamstead gave to The
Church, he loved missionary work the most. He and his wife continued serving
with a Teaching Mission in Samoa and a Temple Mission in New Zealand.
Brother Hamstead graduated from Manchester University in 1946 with a
Bachelors of Science degree and later received his Masters Degree from
London University in 1957. He was the Vice-President of Marketing and
Research for Glaxo Pharmaceuticals and commuted to London by train for over
30 years. He could often be spotted crossing the London Bridge on foot at 6
p.m. heading to the train with his umbrella and bowler hat.
He had a quick smile and kind word for all. He counseled many with his kind
English manner and straight advise. He was slow to find fault and often
quipped "the Gospel is true, the Saints ain't perfect." He is survived by
his wife, Margaret Mary Ball; two daughters, a son, four sisters, and 11
grandchildren.
