| Fundamentalists Protest, ex-Mormons Convene During LDS Conference |
| While leaders of The Church of Jesus Christ of
Latter-day Saints called for more tolerance of others during the Church's
semi-annual General Conference, right-wing and fundamentalist groups outside
protested the Church's policies on homosexuality and abortion, calling them
too lenient. And, just a few blocks away, a group of former Mormons held
their own conference, exploring how to live with LDS Church members. |

| Church Promotes Hinckley Conference Address |
| In an unusual move, The Church of Jesus Christ of
Latter-day Saints is promoting Church President Gordon B. Hinckley's Sunday
morning address to media throughout the U.S. and around the world. The
Church has released his remarks as part of a news release titled, "President
Hinckley Offers Counsel in the Face of War," and put the release on the new
service P.R. Newswire, in addition to its normal submissions of releases to
local media. The Church uses the news service only occasionally, for its
most important press releases. |

| LDS Chapel in Australia Damaged in Firebomb Attack |
| An LDS chapel in Sydney, Australia was damaged in
a firebomb attack on Wednesday, October 3rd, according to local news
reports. The chapel, located on Kelly Street in the Punchbowl neighborhood
of Sydney. The reports say that although no one noticed the fire when it was
set, the building suffered only minor damage, valued at $15,000. |

| LDS Politician Worries That War Will Hurt Religious Freedom |
| Speaking at BYU's 8th annual International Law and
Religion Symposium, Senator Gordon Smith (R-Oregon), one of five
members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the
U.S. Senate, worried that the current war on terrorism would lead
some governments to "sacrifice some freedoms for security," and
worried that religious freedoms would be among those sacrificed.
Smith's comments were echoed by other speakers at the three-day
symposium which ended yesterday. |

| Rare and Storied LDS Book to be Auctioned at Christies in New York |
| The prestigious Christies auction house will
sell a copy of what may be the most valuable published LDS book at
auction October 29th in its Rockefeller Center auction house. The
book, a copy of the 1833 Book of Commandments is one of perhaps 18
remaining copies, also carries one of the more dramatic and
interesting histories of any published book. |

| MoTab Recording to Support September 11th Victims |
| A Mormon Tabernacle Choir recording is one of 15 songs
by various artists included on a new album benefiting the Twin Towers Fund.
The Choir's recording of "The Star Spangled Banner" is the 14th track on the
new album "God Bless America" from Columbia Records, which will be in stores
October 16th. The label says a 'substantial portion' of the proceeds from
album sales will go to the Twin Towers Fund, supporting the families of the
police, firemen and other government personnel who lost their lives in the
World Trade Center. |

| Mormon-Run Airline Expanding, Despite September 11th |
| While almost every other airline is cutting back because
of the drop in air travel follwing the September 11th terrorist attacks,
SkyWest Airlines is actually expanding, thanks to its unique position in the
market. Like other airlines, SkyWest has seen a drop in the passengers it
carries, but it also benefits from its relationship with Delta Airlines and
United Airlines, which have both shielded SkyWest from the drop in
passengers and actually increased the number of routes it flies. |
