Internet: Well-Designed Sites Dominate For a Change
NEW YORK, NEW YORK -- Most of the new websites listed this week are
well-designed, fairly easy to use and visually appealing, a change
from the many small, personal sites that sometimes seem to dominate
our listings of new sites. Surprisingly, the most interesting is "Why
Prophets," which isn't even a commercial site, but is still visually
appealing and useful.
Why Prophets represents the work of Chris Tolworthy, whose arguments
make up the bulk of the site. The other nicely-designed sites are
generally commercial websites, such as Inspire Graphics and NlightN,
although the latter is a little 'over-engineered,' using scripts to
do the work that a simple link could take care of -- and crashing my
computer as a result.
Newly Listed Mormon Websites:
Jeff Benedict
http://www.jeffbenedict.com/
Website for LDS author and now congressional candidate Jeff Benedict,
an expert on Connecticut's Mashantucket Pequot Indians and their
'Foxwoods' casino in Connecticut.
Inspire Graphics
http://www.inspiregraphics.com/lds/
Website for clip-art publisher providing LDS-specific clip art and
self-publishing software. Nice website includes information on each
product, tips for its use, information for wholesalers and a list of
links. This E-commerce site allows on-line ordering.
LDS Chapel Locator
http://www.ldsfaith.org/locations/
Visitors can search this database of addresses of LDS chapels in the
United States. Returns only addresses, not meeting times and other
information, now available in the LDS Church's own meetinghouse
locator feature.
NlightN
http://www.NlightNmusic.com/
Website for LDS acappella group NlightN. Includes information about
upcoming shows, merchandise for sale, a guestbook, newsletter, and
photo gallery, the group's albums, lyrics, and audio files of some
songs. However, this very nicely designed site is graphics-heavy and
crashed my machine.
Saints At War
http://www.saintsatwar.org/
Project of BYU religion professors to catalog the experiences of LDS
servicemen during both world wars. Visitors can add their stories to
the site, read the stories of other veterans, see images of LDS
servicemen and look at interesting facts about LDS participation in
the wars. A BYU conference on this topic is being held on Friday,
November 10th.
Sock It To 'Em
http://www.sockittoem.com/
E-commerce site selling LDS Missionary Christmas Stockings. Orders
placed by phone or fax. Includes description of products, contact
information, stocking stuffers and a list of links.
SPD-RU
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/spd-ru
Russian-language e-mail discussion list about the LDS Church.
Suite 101: Mormonism
http://www.suite101.com/welcome.cfm/mormonism
General site about Mormonism using about.com-like Suite101.com.
Includes links to Mormon sites on the Internet, articles about Mormon
subjects and discussion boards. While not as heavily promoted as
about.com, suite101.com is nicer, not as heavily coded and its
subjects are better organized.
Walking the Line Publications
http://www.walkingthelinebooks.com/
New LDS publisher with three titles set for release in December;
doctrinal works by author Kevan Clawson. Allows on-line ordering and
includes back-cover information from each title.
Why Prophets.com
http://www.whyprophets.com/
Very extensive and visually appealing site arguing why prophets are
crucial. Includes sections on Why Prophecy, Why Believe, Why
Mormonism, Bible Prophecy, Human History and Science.
