MSI: MSI Lags as Dow, Others Return to Pre-9/11 Levels

NEW YORK, NEW YORK -- Led by Dell Computer, Marriott International and Micrel Semiconductor, the Mormon Stock Index rose 2.8% last week, following the broader market indices. But unlike those indices, the MSI is still below its pre-September 11th level, mainly due to stocks hit hardest by the disaster, such as AES Corp., Marriott, Host Marriott and SkyWest Airlines. Surprisingly, power-producer AES Corp. was hardest hit because of its International exposure, including operations in the Middle East.

Last week's increase was broad-based, as 26 of the Mormon stocks rose and just 8 fell for the week. Five stocks had double-digit increases, including Avista Corp., up 11.5% on an analyst buy recommendation; 1-800-Contacts, up 14.5%; Myriad Genetics, up 12.5% on stronger-than-expected earnings; Oakley, up 11.5% as Lehman Brothers recommended the stock; and Swift Transportation, up 10%.
