Before the Restoration -- There Was The Revolution
SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH -- The summer of 1777 was a difficult one for
General George Washington and his poorly equiped and undisciplined
Continental Army. With a force just half the size of the British
Army, Washington could not survive a head-on battle with General
Howe's readcoats. He could only hover, waiting to pick a favorable
time and place.
This is the backdrop for "Prelude to Glory, vol.5: A Cold Bleak Hill"
(Bookcraft, $22.95), bestselling author Ron Carter's continuing
series of historic fiction on the Revolutionary War. In this latest
installment, the Americans seek winter sanctuary at Valley Forge
following disastrous defeats at Brandywine Creek and Germantown.
Fighting off sickness and starvation, the patriots receive
much-needed aid and training from the Marquis de Lafayette of France,
along with German officer Baron von Steuben, who together train the
Americans into the first "true" army of soldiers prepared to battle
the British.
Beloved characters Caleb Duncan, Billy Weems, Eli Stroud, and Mary
Flint experience these thrilling moments in the founding of America
in this must-read sequel to Carter's first four successful volumes in
the "Prelude to Glory" series.
