MSI: MSI Reaches Pre-9/11 Levels

NEW YORK, NEW YORK -- It took sudden surges by out-of-favor stocks AES Corp. and Corvis to move the Mormon Stock Index finally above its September 11th level. As a result, the index rose 6.1% last week, more than double many other indices, to close at 109.20. For the week AES Corp. rose 22% on good news including the expected sale of an Illinois power utility, while Corvis jumped nearly 70% after positive comments about the stock were made at a telecommunication industry conference. Overall, 28 of the 34 stocks in the index rose while just 6 fell.

In addition to AES and Corvis, EarthShell, Oakley and SkyWest airlines all rose strongly. EarthShell rose after it reached an agreement with giant food service company Sodexho underwhich the company will purchase EarthShell's products. Oakley's rise came after Lehman Brothers recommended the stock, while SkyWest rose after it reported significantly higher earnings for the quarter ended September 30th. The biggest decrease for the week was from Oil States International, which fell 11.5% in spite of higher earnings, as analysts foresaw sharply lower oil prices.
