Weber State Honors David O. McKay
OGDEN, UTAH -- David O. McKay, formerly dubbed the patron saint of
Weber State College by LDS President Gordon B. Hinckley, received his
name on the school's education building last week. During the hour
long ceremony in the Austad Auditorium, several speakers elaborated
on McKay's love of education. The building was made possible by a $2
million commitment from the Ashton Family Foundation, The Church of
Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Foundation and the Stewart
Education Foundation.
Rodney H. Brady, former Weber State President and current President
of LDS Church-owned Deseret Management Corporation, spoke to a crowd
of over 600 and said, "It is indeed an honor to have his name
associated with any building." While teaching at Weber State, then
Weber Academy, McKay taught literature, history, and music. McKay
left Weber Academy in 1908 but continued his association with the
school while serving as a member of The Board of Trustees for 14
years.
Alan Ashton, grandson to David O. McKay and founder of WordPerfect,
said that is was appropriate that the education building be named
after his grandfather who was known for correcting his
grandchildren's grammar. "He was very loving and had a great concern
for others," Ashton said. "I hope (students) can try to emulate those
Christ-like characteristics he did in his life."
