Biggest Rancher in the East
The December issue of Florida Trends, a local business magazine, takes an in depth look at the Deseret Ranch of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the largest cattle ranch in the U.S. east of the Mississippi river. But while the Church has taken a low profile with the ranch, as it does all its private business operations, this article gives a surprising amount of detailed information about the ranch, its revenues and costs, and its history.

Deseret Book Lays-off 14 From Headquarters Staff
In what some employees are calling the first large layoff in its history, Deseret Book issued pink slips this morning to 14 employees at its Salt Lake City headquarters. The sudden layoffs apparently took the staff by surprise and left many wondering why the 135-year-old company would take such a step.

MSI Special: MSI Ends Year Up 3.4%; Outperforms Dow, NASDAQ
The Mormon Stock Index, continued its exceptional performance, ended 2001 up 3.4% while every other major index was down at least twice that for the year. And for the last quarter of the year, the index rose more than 25% in a quick recovery from its post-September 11th low, and also outperformed the other major indices, except for the NASDAQ. The MSI, established in July 2000, tries to measure the performance of Mormon executives in the business world.

MSI Up 2% Again
The Mormon Stock Index rose 2% again last week led by rises at Black &Decker and Hillenbrand Industries and outpacing all the major market indices. The increase leaves the MSI ahead of all the indices for the year, and ahead of all but the NASDAQ for the quarter with just one day of trading left in the year.
