Sports: Another Mormon Hockey Player, College Players Identified

NEW YORK, NEW YORK -- Mormon News subscriber Gina Paz reports that Florida Panther's Left Wing Bill Lindsay is Mormon, expanding our list of hockey players to three active players. And other subscribers helped greatly expand our list of NCAA Division 1 college football players, just as the season is ending. Now Mormon News is seeking to start and expand lists of college basketball players (both men and women) as well as lists in baseball, softball and other sports starting soon.

Meanwhile, Mormon basketball players suffered an off week generally while football players had a great week. Among the five professional basketball players Scot Pollard had the best performance, -- one that matches his level of play this season so far. The other four didn't play as well as they have so far this season. The Los Angeles Laker's Mark Madsen did get a lot of playing time (he doubled the minutes on the court he's seen to date), playing 41 minutes over three games, but not playing as well as he has before. Surprisingly, the Dallas Maverick's Shawn Bradley played the least (even less than perennial bench player Travis Knight).

In football, former BYU star Ty Detmer got back on the field, as the Lions tried to do something with the remaining games in their moribund season. But in spite of the new opportunity, Detmer again failed to deliver, instead throwing another two interceptions (raising his season total to 10) and the Lions went scoreless in the game.

Other Mormon players fared much better. Last year's pro-bowler Chad Lewis must have felt like his old self in the Eagle's game against the hapless Washington Redskins, catching 7 passes for 74 yards, a season high. Linebacker Rob Morris likewise reached a season high, bringing down 10 ball carriers, a season high, and getting credited for solo tackles every time. Meanwhile, the Minnesota Vikings, veteran punter Lee Johnson's new team, have started using Johnson as a place kicker also. Johnson has a 57 yard average in five kick-offs so far.

Eagles coach Andy Reid bettered his team's record to 10-5 in the game against the Redskins, one that must have felt good after the Eagle's previous loss to the San Francisco Forty-Niners. Oddly enough, Dave Campo's Dallas Cowboys, who know sport the mirror record of the Eagles (5-10), managed to shellac the Forty-Niner's this week.

Unfortunately, the Panther's Lindsay didn't have a very good week, managing just six shots on goal in four games, and coming up short of any goals. The Minnesota Wild's Aaron Gavey, on the other hand, scored his fifith goal of the season, one of five shots on goal he made last week.

CFL

The CFL season will begin in June 20th. We have identified just two Mormon players, but suspect several others may be Mormon.

Wide receiver Ben Cahoon of the Montreal Alouettes is LDS, and Winnipeg Blue Bombers Linebacker Sefa O'Reilly is LDS.

While we are compiling a list of Mormon players in the CFL, that league doesn't make available player by player statistics.

We have also identified the following possible Mormon players, based on the 2001 Rosters:

  • Rob Hitchcock, Hamilton Tiger-Cats -- Weber State
  • Trevor Shaw, Hamilton Tiger-Cats -- Weber State
  • Kevin Alexander, Montreal Alouettes -- Utah State
  • Anthony Calvillo, Montreal Alouettes -- Utah State
  • Josh Cochran, Montreal Alouettes -- Utah
