North Side Mormon youths have a story to tell
San Antonio TX Express News 15Oct99 D1
By Susie P. Gonzalez: Express-News Staff Writer

A service project begun by three LDS high school seniors is turning into a Saturday morning literary treat for children. The students, who attend Churchill High School and Reagan High School, have put aside their school rivalries to bring life to the Children's Reading Room at the Reagan library jointly operated by the city and North East School District.

As part of their faith, Elise Cannon, Joshua Brown, and Laura Oliveros will perform a minimum of two service projects that total 20 hours or more. The trio was successful in pulling together a group of teens who attend Churchill and the LDS church to help develop the children's programs. "I wanted this to be a place where kids can feel safe and look at books in their own world," Elise Cannon said.

The room will be home to a weekly children's story hour, and will offer programs for children under 18 months, preschoolers, and older children. In early November the programs will expand to include puppet shows and possibly children's songs. Women from the Stone Oak Ward did most of the painting and decorating for the special reading room.
