Sports: Pollard Back in Form, Football Defense Shines

NEW YORK, NEW YORK -- The Sacramento Kings' Scot Pollard is coming back into form as the NBA's season progresses, scoring more and collecting more rebounds, while other Mormon basketball players either aren't getting on the court or aren't performing as well. Meanwhile, four Mormon football players, all playing defense, are shining and making real contributions to their teams.

Pollard scored 25 points over three games last week in just less than 100 minutes of play. In contrast, the Dallas Mavericks' Shawn Bradley played just 40 minutes in three games, and scored 7 points. The other three Mormon players, including the Laker's Mark Madsen, played less than 10 minutes for the week.

In football, Chad Lewis is the only offensive player who is making much of an impact, and that is pretty low. In the Eagles' last game, Lewis caught four passes for 27 yards and scored a touchdown. But that's nothing compared to Lewis' performance last year, when he was selected to the pro bowl. But on defense the situation is different. The Browns' Brant Boyer had a great game, recording 7 tackles, including 3 solos, while Colts' standout Rob Morris earned 6 tackles (6 solo) and the Forty-Niner's Derek Smith earned 5 tackles (4 solo) and was credited with helping to sack the quarterback.

Coach Andy Reid led his Eagles to another win, keeping his team at the top of the NFC East, well ahead of Dave Campo's Dallas Cowboys, in the basement of the same division. The Green Bay Packers (Darrell Bevell) also won last week.

Meanwhile, Aaron Gavey of the Minnesota Wild played three games and managed 4 shots on goal, but failed to score. But for Nashville Predator's assistant coach Brent Peterson, his goalies improved dramatically last week, giving up just 7 goals, but the team committed two major penalties in the week.In golf, all Mormon players were idle for the week.
