NZ Scholar Critical of Mormons Wins Research Grant |
A New Zealand scholar whose critical
statements about Mormon history have led to clashes with Mormon
students and colleagues will be coming to the United States to study
Mormon History. Dr. Raymond Richards has won a $5,000 Andrew W.
Mellon Foundation fellowship for study at the Huntington Library,
which he will use to study how Mormon missionaries converted New
Zealand's native Maori people to Mormonism. |

Brisbane Temple Construction Begins |
Construction on the Brisbane
Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is finally
underway. Ground was broken for the building last May after delays
brought on by opposition from the building's neighbors were resolved
in February. Now the projected cost for the Temple has doubled since
the Temple's announcement, to $17.25 million (Australian), and local
officials are now saying that they are glad the building is underway. |

Shauna Rohbock: Her Need for Speed may Lead...to the Olympics |
Shauna Rohbock has wanted to be in the Olympics
for several years. If the 24-year-old BYU soccer and heptathalon
champion gets her chance in February, it will be as brakeman for a US
two-woman bobsled team when women's bobsled makes its debut as an
Olympic sport. |

Before LDS Missions: Teammates; Now: Rivals |
Nic Sparrow and Chad Evans were teammates on the
'96-'97 Weber High School team that went 21-0 before losing a
quarterfinals game in the Utah State 5A playoffs. But Saturday
Sparrow and Evans, who have since both served LDS missions, were
rivals as Weber State University and Utah State University faced each
other for the 51st time. Weber State won the contest 67-64. |

LDS Canadian MP Seeks Party Leadership |
An LDS doctor, Grant Hill, who also
represents the McLeod riding in Canada's parliament, may decide as
early as Monday to seek the leadership of the relatively new Canadian
Alliance party, which has its roots in Alberta province. Should he
run for party leader, Hill may face three other candidates, including
former Alliance leader Stockwell Day. Hill says he has been pressured
by friends and a broad base of party members from across Canada to
seek the position. |

LDS Senator Gets Endorsement from The Human Rights Campaign |
Oregon Senator Gordon Smith, one of five LDS Church
members serving in the U.S. Senate, has received the endorsement of
the Human Rights Campaign, the nation's largest gay and lesbian
political organization, in his effort to win reelection in 2002.
Smith is the only Republican and only Mormon endorsed by the
campaign, which comes because of his work in fighting discrimination. |

Returned Missionary Among 32 Rhodes Scholars |
A Belmont, Massachusetts LDS Church
member and returned missionary is one of 32 Americans selected for
one of the World's most prestigious scholarships. Robert R. Porter,
24, a senior at Harvard University, will spend at least two years at
Oxford University in England studying politics and political theory.
But several aspects of the scholarship echo the accomplishments of
Porter and his family. |

"The Other Side of Heaven" is the film adaptation of
Elder John H. Groberg's book "Eye of the Storm." Taking place in the
1950's, "The Other Side of Heaven" starts out as a nostalgic period
piece and becomes a coming-of-age epic. John Groberg (Christopher
Gorham-- "A Life Less Ordinary) leaves his family and girlfriend
(Anne Hathaway-- "The Princess Diaries") to serve a mission for the
LDS church in the Kingdom of Tonga. |

MoTab To Appear on 'Touched by an Angel' Sunday |
The Mormon Tabernacle Choir is featured on
Sunday's episode of the TV series 'Touched by an Angel,' adding a
musical tribute in an episode that supports a family in the aftermath
of the September 11th terrorist attacks. The episode, "I'll Be Home
for Christmas" will be broadcast on Sunday, instead of in 'Touched by
an Angel's' normal Saturday night timeslot. |

Aspen Books Outsources Distribution in Restructuring |
Aspen Books and Goldleaf Press, the LDS
publishers owned by LDS investing guru Wade Cook, will now be
distributed by an outside company as part of a major restructuring.
Under the changes, books published by the two publishers, will now be
distributed by Brigham City, Utah-based Brigham Distributing, owned
by a former employee, instead of by in house distributor Origin Book
Sales. |
